In memory of NHS stars

30-Nov-04

The unit I work in is based within a NHS Trust. Last year the trust obtained three stars – the highest rating possible. Above is a picture of a mug presented to me to mark this achievement. Nice isn’t it?
Inside the mug was a small bag of Thorntons toffees.
They were also very nice, [...]

Chorley cakes

27-Nov-04

I’m surprised to find that the town of my birth, may be the ancestral home of George W Bush.
If George is reading this blog and wishes to sample traditional food from his Lancastrian heritage, he may wish put his gas cooker on Gas Mark 6 and get baking. Tuning in to Chorley FM – [...]

The anthroposophical anti-vaccinators

26-Nov-04

The Belfast Telegraph has a fascinating comparison of the reasons for reduced MMR uptake in Northern Ireland and in Germany. Sadly the article is pay-per-view, but you can see it in Google’s cache.
Currently Freiburg in Germany is suffering soaring rates of measles, with tragic results, due to a largely middle class boycott of MMR vaccine. [...]

New medicines and drug safety

26-Nov-04

Interesting views from Tom McKillop at Astra Zeneca:
SIR TOM McKILLOP, chief executive of Astra Zeneca, has called for a radical shake-up in the way new medicines are made available to patients in an effort to tackle mounting public concern about drug safety.

McKillop proposed that the industry should adopt a system of conditional approval, whereby new [...]

MMR – Dispatches

26-Nov-04

Unfortunately, I missed the Dispatches Programme about MMR, as I was chairing a professional meeting that night and neglected to set the video.
However, the journalist responsible for the programme, Brian Deer, has emailed me with a link to his extensive webpages, which document his investigations into Andrew Wakefield.
Enjoy.

Nails in the coffin

17-Nov-04

Wakefield is in the news again. When reading this, imagine the outcry if the government was found to have a potential conflict of interest of a similar nature.
THE doctor whose work provoked a worldwide scare over MMR failed to reveal that he was developing his own commercial rival to the vaccine.
It has emerged that [...]

If medicines were planes

17-Nov-04

One of my interests is potential confusion between drugs names. It is thought to be responsible for 25% of medication errors.
The BBC report on a study to be presented at the Ergonomics Society conference:
Prof Gale said: “Many tablets have unusual names which can look confusingly similar.
“Medicinal packages can also be similar in shape and [...]

Kilmacduagh Monastery

13-Nov-04

The Leaning Tower of Kilmacduagh, Kilmacduagh Monastery, County Galway.
Kilmacduagh Monastery (Church of the son of Duach), is about 5km from the town of Gort in County Galway. The monastry was founded in the 7th century by St Colmain Ma Duach, and was eventually plundered in the 13th century. Above you can see one [...]

Dingle Bay

Looking towards Great Blasket across Dingle Bay, Kerry, Ireland.
