Hi Anthony- thanks for the link to the Lords Rake information, and inparticular the Wasdale news website. Fond memories from there as Glynis & I were wed there when her dad ran the youth hostel.
It’s not quite as bad as they make out. The gully is indeed chock full of rocks waiting to come down but if you climb up on the right you can stay out of their path.
Thanks Gd.
In the end we decided to do Blencathra and bottled Sharp Edge instead. About which more later!
Went up Lord’s Rake this Saturday (25th Feb) in full winter conditions. The scree slope up to the start of the rake was very icy and covered with patches of frozen snow. The rake itself was packed with snow which had frozen in to a solid sheet of ice! The rake would not have been possible to climb without ice axe and crampons, which two of our party had. We had to tuen back at the second col however, as it became apparent that those without this equipment could not continue. We then had a very tricky decent back down the rake. We all made it down safely however and ended up with an excellent climb up to the summit of Scafell Pike via Mikledore.
Via Mickledore, yes, but then what? Broad Stand or Foxes Tarn?
Scafell Pike not Scafell – We just turned left once we reached the top of Mikledore and followed the snowy path to the summit in brilliant sunshine! I was suprised to see quite a few people on the summit as it was very cold (-15 to -25 wind chill according to the forecast!) and most did not have crampons on so would have had a very tricky climb up and decent to look forward to!
