As Arab Janjaweed militia continue to attempt to purge the Darfur region of Sudan, killing men, women, children and even the unborn (with the Sudanese governments support) what possibly could make things worse for the people of Darfur?
How about a Polio outbreak?
The failure of Northern Nigeria regions to carry out a vaccination programme documented here, here, here and here, is starting to have its inevitable consequences. A polio epidemic is spreading throughout West and Central Africa, with five times as many children being infected with polio this year compared to last.
Darfur has had the first case of polio in three years, in fact the first case of polio in Sudan for three years.
The people of Darfur are stuck between religious fundamentalists deliberately murdering them with AK47s and religious fundamentalists in another country condemning them to disease.
In Darfur, the UN Children’s Fund and the World Health Organization are trying to vaccinate large amounts of children , they hope to be able to save 50,000 children by vaccinating for measles alone. At the same time they will be attempting to give polio vaccinations.
I don’t do celebrities, but it is notable that, in the above article, Angelina Jolie says far more about the issues in Darfur than the Arab League would ever dare. In fact, the Arab League cosied up to the Republic of Sudan.
